Chocolate
Cocoa beans contain Theobromine and methylxanthines, which are harmful to pets. After eating, symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and trembling may appear; in severe cases it can cause irregular heartbeat and even be fatal.
Chewing gum
Chewing gum contains xylitol (Xylitol, commonly nicknamed “saai lok to”). After eating it, the pet’s blood sugar level drops, which may cause general weakness, disorientation and trembling; the liver may be damaged and in severe cases even suffer necrosis.
Melon seeds
The melon seeds we usually eat contain a lot of salt, and excessive sodium can affect a pet’s liver and kidney function.
Turnip cake / New Year cake
These cakes contain a lot of fat; after eating them, diarrhoea and vomiting may occur, and they can even cause pancreatitis.
New Year flowers (e.g. lilies, daffodils)
The leaves, pollen and petals of lilies contain toxins that can cause kidney failure or vomiting in cats. If a cat’s paw touches a lily and it then licks it, the toxin may enter the body, and in severe cases it can be fatal.
