Dog takes a showerDuring the hot summer in Hong Kong, the dogs’ body odor has become stronger. Although in winter you might only bathe your furry friend once a month, in summer, the strong dog smell they give off may require bathing once a week.

However, there is no absolute strict rule on how often dogs should be bathed; the frequency of bathing can vary greatly among dogs.

How often should your dog be bathed?

The frequency of bathing depends on its coat quality, living environment, habits, and skin condition. Some dogs don’t go out often and have a mild body odor or dry skin. In fact, you can bathe them once a month or more, and usually just use a comb to brush their fur.

For dogs with strong body odor, oily skin, daily outings, and frequent grass play, it is recommended to increase bathing frequency as needed. However, unless advised by a veterinarian, it is not recommended to bathe more than once a week.

Some dogs have atopic skin diseases and are prone to allergies and itching. In such cases, frequent bathing can help remove allergens from the skin. However, shampoo should only be used once a week; at other times, rinse with water to prevent the skin from worsening over time.

Why can’t you shower every day like a human?

Although you might want your dog to shower every day and sleep with you in bed, you can’t actually bathe your dog every day, as that can worsen their skin.

Dogs’ skin is actually thinner than human skin. Frequent bathing can wash away the protective sebum layer, weakening the skin’s defenses and causing dryness and flakes.

Frequent bathing makes your dog’s skin more susceptible to irritation and infections, leading to skin diseases. Unless the vet recommends medicated baths for treatment, regardless of the dog, bathing is still limited to once a week!
