A study by Iowa State University found that pure nepetalactone extracted from catnip is ten times as effective as DEET at repelling mosquitoes. Catnip is also a companion plant that can repel pests. Some other plants of the genus Nepeta can be used as food for lepidopteran larvae, such as a casebearer moth called Coleophora albitarsella. When a cat senses cut leaves or stems, it may rub, roll, paw, chew, lick, jump, softly growl or salivate heavily, and some cats will howl or meow. These reactions stop after a few minutes, followed by about two hours of rest, after which the cat will respond to the plant again.
