Get to a vet immediately!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc15Which dogs are at higher risk?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following breeds have a higher chance of developing GDV:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>German Shepherd<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Golden Retriever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Labrador Retriever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Great Dane \ud83d\udc49the most common<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Irish Wolfhound<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saint Bernard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Afghan Hound<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Standard Poodle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dogs with a <strong>deep chest and large build<\/strong> are usually the most susceptible.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udfe5How is it treated? Can it be cured?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If GDV is suspected, the vet will arrange the following immediately:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stabilising blood pressure and giving fluids<\/strong> to restore basic vital functions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Passing a stomach tube or inserting a needle to release the gas<\/strong>, reducing pressure in the stomach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immediate surgery<\/strong>: turning the stomach back into its correct position, sometimes <strong>stitching the stomach in place (gastropexy)<\/strong> to stop it twisting again.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If any tissue has died, <strong>part of the stomach or the spleen<\/strong> may need to be removed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The success rate of surgery is not low, but if the dog is brought in late the mortality rate is very high.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2705How can you prevent it?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It cannot be avoided 100 percent, but you can reduce the risk:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Split meals<\/strong>: feed two or more meals a day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avoid activity straight after eating<\/strong>: rest for at least 30 minutes before exercise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use an anti-gulping bowl (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcpets.com.hk\/shop\/product\/%e5%af%b5%e7%89%a9%e6%85%a2%e9%a3%9f%e7%a2%97\/\">slow feeder bowl<\/a>)<\/strong>: to make your dog eat more slowly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avoid encouraging your dog to eat too fast<\/strong>: especially when several dogs are competing for food<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consider preventive gastropexy surgery<\/strong>: particularly useful for high-risk breeds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Watch its mood<\/strong>: try not to startle or stress it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc3eIn summary<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gastric dilatation-volvulus is no small matter. It is a life-threatening emergency. Owners must be able to recognise the signs clearly, and those with high-risk breeds need to be especially careful about prevention.
